Acting on the suggestions of the Bangalore Healthy Urbanisation Pro j e c t (BHUP), the BBMP is ready to start yoga classes for students at Corporation high schools from January, 2010. “Majority of students coming to Corporation schools are from BPL families. Yoga is a way to help students lead a healthy and disciplined life,” said C Kameshwari Devi, local coordinator, BHUP.
With the success of the pilot project in the Corporation school at HMT Layout in 2007-08, BBMP is set to introduce yoga in five more schools for students from the VIIIth to Xth standards.
The schools are Vidyapeetha Corporation High School, Mudalpalya Corporation High School, Shantinagar Corporation High School, Corporation Girls High School at Robertson Road and HMT Layout Corporation School. Around 1,543 students will benefit from the yoga classes. Yoga trainers from the Bangalore Panchasheela Nagara SKY Trust will train the students.
Kameshwari Devi added, “Yoga not only helps in preventing and curing diseases, but also helps remove laziness, improves one’s concentration.” Dr LT Gayatri, chief health officer, BBMP, said, “Rs 73,700 has been sanctioned for the introduction of yoga in Corporation schools. Besides the five schools, we also have plans to extend it to all BBMP schools and g o v e r n m e n t schools later.” Though there were plans to introduce physical education, including yoga in government and aided schools from this year, it failed to take off because of lack of specific curriculum and physical education teachers.
LR Vaidyanathan, chairman, Physical Education Text Book Reviewing Committee told Express, “The syllabus is ready and the gazette notification has been made. From the next academic year, physical education will be introduced in all government and aided schools for students from IVth to IXth standards.” Luna Dewan | ENS Bangalore, December 18 ACTING on the suggestions of the Bangalore Healthy Urbanisation Pro j e c t (BHUP), the BBMP is ready to start yoga classes for students at Corporation high schools from January, 2010.
